Sew What?

The "Sewing Room" needs work. A LOT of work! The mess as been rearranged a few times since this 2002 photo, but it is still a livingroom with a sewing area crammed into it.
The Plan is to take over the livingroom completely and truly make it our LIVING room... that means where we sew, compute, build models, sew, plan other projects, and did I mention ... sew?

To do this, we will get rid of the sofas. We will probably keep one section because we are going to make the old dining room (which currently serves as our computing room) into an "entertainment" room... with the TV and Stereo and all our DVDs, CDs, Records (yep... ol' 33rpm) and Video Tapes. That room is right off the kitchen so munchies will be close and will no longer be dragged upstairs, since that is where the TV currently is. I'm getting the TV OUT of my bedroom!!! More on THAT room later, of course.

The curio cabinet/shelf unit that currently houses our "pretties" will likely stay where it is... That's because it is bolted to the wall, and we don't really have a better wall to put it on. Since we spend most of our time in the new LIVING room/action area, it'll be nice to actually get to look at these things I've collected over the gazillion years we've been married.

So other than the pretties, the room will be a blank slate. After the painting and the carpet cleaning, I'd like a windowseat/bench in front of the windows.
I suppose I ought to measure, to get a better idea of the scale, but it is all going to fit just fine.

Before I can begin though, Emily wants a dress for Prom, so I will have to make that in the chaos that we have presently. I hope to have this room all taken care of by April 30. And the entertainment room ready by May 20. That's THIS year... 2005!

The Reality
We got the sofas moved out -- but decided against putting the computers in the living room -- so it is strictly a sewing room. It has potential to turn out quite nicely and I'm pleased.
Why do I need a sewing room anyway? Why don't I just get rid of all this junk and have one shelf or box of supplies and one sewing machine? I don't know! I hang onto the two old Singers so if friends come over to sew there'll be machines. (Has this ever happened? No.) I want a sewing room because I hate hauling stuff out and cramming it back again. I like convenience. I hated the sofa in the living room, but am finding I love it in the Family Room (created out of the dining room.) To me, having "my own space" for what I love to do is as close to ideal as it gets.
What did I (or Annie and I) sew over the last year anyway? Do I need this PERMANENT space? Probably not, but I love it!
I made these purses in May 2004. I gave the red white and blue one to Cyndee, but I LOVED the one I made for me. Unfortunately a black inkpen exploded inside it and it soaked through. I still stow things in it at home but I don't use it as my handbag anymore. I really want to make several more!
I made this costume for Emily's Dance Recital in 2004.And some minor costume alterations (mostly hems) in 2004 and 2005.
It didn't require any machine sewing, but I made an array of flowered headpieces for the Christmas Angel in 2004.Oh yes, I did sew a bit for "Fiddler on the Roof"in February 2005. How could I have forgotten THAT? Did a LOT of creating, repurposing and alterations.
In April I made a prom dress. Too bad she didn't go to the prom it was made for!And then there were a number of hems to be taken up for the Dance Arts Academy recital.
Okay, then. I suppose I do get plenty of use out of my special space. AND ... I'm even willing to share it with Bill and Emily for model building, as long as they keep their stuff on the designated table. (Which will be placed in front of the windows where there is plenty of light.)

June 2005
Needless to say (Needle-ss?) the sewing room was a disaster. SO (sew?) much STUFF and some of it not even related to sewing or crafts.
