October 2005
October 1, 2005
Working. And it's getting to be too much, I'm going to have to cut back. I feel like I'm about to shatter. What a wimp. I have to mow the lawn. (sigh) Hopefully I really do have tomorrow off and can get caught up on housework before I have to start back in on Monday.

October 2, 2005
Yayyy! I did get to have today off, and I'm so relieved. I slept til about 7:30 then got restless (too used to getting up at 4:15!!!) I cleaned the bookshelves in the bedroom (can't wait until we get the loft cleared out and set up as a library!) Annie and I had breakfast, loaded the dishwasher, and now I'm about to tackle the dining table. It feels GOOD to have enough energy to clean up some! I work tomorrow then Tuesday and Thursday are half days (THANK GOODNESS!!!) I really can't take much more, I'm starting to feel the next worst thing to wiped out. Oh well, we'll just hope the end is in sight!
The snow melted, but it is still pretty damp and I'm not sure mowing is a great idea. I guess it really ought to do it, or else in the spring things are gonna be worse than nasty. I'll bundle up and check it out here in a bit, the current temperature is 34.5°F.

Someday I would like to have our own online weather station like the ones that link to the Wunderground pages. That would be awesome.

October 3, 2005
We had such fun last night! Since we hadn't celebrated Emily's birthday enough (it was in August) we had a Family night and ate lasagna for dinner, had birthday cake, then played Scattergories. It was hilarious!
What a HUGE relief. I wasn't needed today at work so was able to come home and get some stuff done, then take some much deserved pain medication and REST.

Temp 48 at about 7pm Alaska Time 10 03 2005
I mowed the front and back yards (not the side, though) so it can
"S-N-O-W" anytime now...

October 4, 2005
A lovely, bright, CRISP day, today! We are getting a handle on getting ready for this winter! Unbelievable! Bill has set up heating oil delivery and has arranged billing for that and for gasoline. It's gorgeous today so HOPEFULLY we can get half the garage (at least) cleared out... provided he gets home before dark... We'll see how it goes!
Arrgh. Nope he is going flying, so instead I cleaned out the old dead fireweeds and stuff from part of the front flower bed. Not the most sensible thing for me to be doing, but it ought to have been done months ago and I wanted it done so I did it.
Who knows how much longer this gorgeous weather will last? Well, I work 7am to noon tomorrow and Thursday, so maybe I can get a little bit more done on my own. (sigh)

October 5, 2005
Up and at'em, Atom Ant! It's 5:00 this morning but the sun is far from on the rise just yet. Going in at 7am doesn't really have much advantage over 6am, but for some reason it just seems a little less stressful today. Good enough! I like opening and getting things ready, but if I'm only working 7am to noon, it's okay too. Golly. Am I happy, or what? That's sort of cool. Nothing to complain about, imagine that!?

October 6, 2005
Ladies, start your engines... day two of my work week. It was TOUGH waking up this morning. Oh well. Beats the alternative.

October 7, 2005
Work. Dance class is tonight. Working Saturday and Sunday. Weather is gorgeous today though! Hope the family can get some garage cleaning done on the weekend!?

Temp 49 at about 6pm Alaska Time 10 07 2005

October 8, 2005           Work.

October 9, 2005
          Work.
Halleluiah!!! It may say Sunday on the calendar but it says FRIDAY to me! After a grueling two weeks averaging 44 ½ hours each, and only one day off each of those weeks, I am GOOD and ready for two whole days off!!! (doing happy dance!) Not that I was scheduled for all that time, but it is the way things worked out with training and so forth. No problem, a mighty fine paycheck to be sure, and a GREAT appreciation for a break! Of course the mighty fine paycheck is going for debts, but at least (and at last) I have something to pay with!
On my two days off I have a web site project to design and a costume for Kirsten (Emily's friend from North Pole High School Choir) to wear in the FLOT production of Bye Bye Birdie.

October 10, 2005
I TOTALLY took today off and read Diana Gabaldon's new book.

October 11, 2005
Great day! Met with Labrenz Landscaping about updating their website and working on a new project. Looking forward to it!

October 12, 2005
Work and more running around getting stuff done... wow time flies when you're having fun, doesn't it? Yeah. Right.

October 13, 2005
One of those extremely long, almost unbearably complicated days. But as I overheard one gentleman at the airport say, "Any day above dirt is a good day."

October 14-16, 2005
Annual Urban Deacon Retreat -- a very nice gathering which accomplished a lot and encouraged a lot of constructive planning.

October 16, 2005
Worked a couple of hours and then rested up for tomorrow...

October 17, 2005
Worked a 10 hour shift. Thank goodness I have tomorrow and the next day off, I'm about to collapse.

October 18, 2005
It's SNOWING! We've had an inch or two in the last week, but this stuff is for REAL... If it stays nice and cold, skiiers are gonna find this heavenly!
Getting a lot done today on websites and the house. Nice to have something go right, hm?
Aww, it didn't stay cold enough and the snow got all mushy and melty and messy. What a waste of flakes!!!

October 19, 2005
Had the day off (whoo-hoo, two in a row!) and worked at home on websites and sewing.

October 20, 2005
Worked part of the day (okay 6 am to about 2pm? that's a full day, that's 8 hours!) and then went home to plan some sewing. Annie and I watched some "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" episodes that Emily and I had seen in the summer time. We laughed until our sides ached and we could barely breathe. Then I did some sign designs for the CHAM and worked on Kirsten's dress for "Bye Bye Birdie."

October 25, 2005
Been swamped. Still swamped. News later.

October 28, 2005
Rehearsal tonight at the Westmark. We're having the feeling maybe we should have done it in costume so we'd have a sense of timing, but I'm sure everything will be okay. Keeping up with Emily will be full time, but I hope I'll be helpful in some other ways too. I got the vendor signs and a poster for each dressing room with the order of the music, etc. So... tomorrow night! We'll see! Can't wait!

We picked up Emily at Dance Theatre Fairbanks from "Babes in Toyland" practice and went straight to the Westmark to start getting ready.
Makeup took us a little while, and we didn't have everything we needed to do her hair, but since I'd worked that morning there was just no time to get it all together. As it was, we did pretty well!
I'd planned Emily's makeup for several weeks but hadn't tried it out until the night of the performance. We think it turned out really cool!
Since the stage projected out into the audience, we didn't go as dark or distinct as we would have for a theatre stage performance. As it was, she looked gorgeous and very dramatic!

Make-Up Process

  1. As always, she applied 2 coats of foundation to clean skin, letting each coat dry completely before proceeding to the next step.
  2. Face powder was applied to reduce facial shine. (Yes, we know we added glitter for shine, but that's a DIFFERENT kind of shine!)
  3. Her cheeks were pinkened with a light dusting of shimmery blush
3. Outlined the eye-design with white liner pencil.

4. Lilac stage make-up filled inthe shadow area.

5. Added lilac sparkles to the shadow area, silver glitter in some areas, and iridescent glitter in the remaining spaces.
6. Added purple eyeliner on upper lid; below lower lid, false eyelashes with sparklies

7. Added glittery gel and palest pink sparklies to cheeks

8. And lip color!
VOILA!
9. Her hair was put into a ponytail, curled and glittered. (Next time we will use spray glitter, blowing on the sparkledust simply did not work as well as we'd hoped!)

10. A hairpiece was added for dramatic length.

Does anybody else think she looks like a pouting pageant baby?

Deb took a little time to be pretty too.

Deb & Royce are ready for the show!

Emily's ready too!

From the program:

Tonight's Fairy

"Emily Dourte sings, acts and dances, which is commonly known as a "triple threat." With a number of plays and musicals under her belt, she looks forward to the opportunity for more roles in the future. When she isn't studying vocal performance at UAF she is dancing four hours per week at Dance Arts Academy, a local studio and is active in her Church."

We learned a valuable lesson too late about wands with glitter. Out on her first number Emily waved her wand and filled the air... and her EYES with the stuff. After she got offstage, she and Annie went into the restroom and somehow managed to get it out and the show went on.
          What we learned:
  1. Keep your head turned away and down when tossing sparklies.
  2. Emily is a genuine trouper... I'd have gone straight to the emergency room, she went back to the stage!

October 31, 2005     Happy Halloween!
The doorbell rang three times. The dogs went ballistic. Next year I am dressing them up AND building a haunted house or castle looking thing on the front porch. It will be well-lit and more FUNNY than scary. Now that I know we can get trick-or-treaters, I'm ready to treat with more than tootsie pops (Emily ate all the Kit-Kats, I can't find the Reese's Peanutbutter Cups... and uhm... I'm working on the Milky Ways...)
