Countdown To
Annie (& Smuckers?)
Coming Home

We all miss Annie and Smuckers!

July 1, 2005
Happy July Fool's Day. We have a dying tree in the backyard I hope to get the guys to cull out sometime before the 4th. We'll see if it happens. If not, no big deal, it'll come down eventually.
We've had at least one other tree, maybe two, that we have had to get rid of because of this same problem. I'm not sure what it is, but it just starts dying and/or growing concentrated odd "growths" of dead twigs, etc.

It doesn't look too bad in the picture, but it is really getting sick and straggly.
The other thing I hope the guys can do soon is get the old sofa off the back deck. It takes up a lot of room and the tarp just captures water to breed skeeters in. Ick.
In other news, Emily has a squirrel in the roof/ceiling of her cabin at camp. She lives in the "BOTCH" which stands for "Back of the Craft House" and says she's going squirrel hunting this weekend. She says it throws pinecones at her. (giggling) I told her to take a picture! Updates on this item as they occur...
This evening we had a great big HUGE thunderstorm that knocked the power out and everything. It was gorgeous. The thunder was tremendous. I absolutely LOVE thunderstorms and it was great. I'm nuts. (shrug) I wouldn't like them all the time, and I'm glad we don't live where there are big tornadoes and stuff... but one once in awhile... is just fantastic.

Son bought one of those 5 DVD changer things. It is evil. It kept me up until after 3AM watching Gilmore Girl Season 2 DVDs. Evil, evil thing! I slept until NOON!
Admittedly that IS after I was awake at 6 am to see Bill off on a flight for the Diocese (sort of see? I opened one eye!) Then I read awhile (one of the books Annie left, something really weird) and went back to sleep. Bill(y) made Orange Danishes, yum! I will have one or two shortly.
Meantime, I have showered, it's nearly 1PM and I'm ready to take on the day. I think I'll change the sheets and crawl back into bed. (groan)
It looks like more nasty weather may be coming our way.

July 3, 2005
I finished the book Annie left, More Than You Know: A Novel by Beth Gutcheon. It was pretty good, but not something I would have picked up to read myself. The editorial review calls it "poignant" but I call it "morbid"... An old woman's memoirs of her encounters with a 100 year old "ghost" that haunted her visit to Maine when she was 17. Okay, the love story part was poingant, the ghosty part was morbid. Still, it's a darn sight better than the other book I'm slogging through: The Shadow of the Lion. That one is not holding my interest much. I'm determined to finish it, but... it's just dragging.
Bill noticed a large dark cloud in the south and called us out to look. I took the opportunity to catch him and Emily with the camera and found another project for the list!
The cloud passed south of us with only a bit of wind, no rainfall here at the house.
Later on we got a little bit, but it rains then clears, then rains ... seems like several times a day.
The next "big" project I would like the guys to look at is painting this section of the house and cleaning out the dryer vent. This way if Daddy falls, Son is around to help me get him to the doctor or whatever. As long as I have somebody to boss around, I won't fret or panic, but if Bill tries this on his own, I'll have a fit or something. It also depends on if the paint we bought at K-mart years ago (how many? I can't remember!) is still useable. If not... painting waits until the ship comes in. But the dryer vent clean-out is a "must do" soon!
The fireweed and globeflower are in bloom so I snapped a few shots of those today.

The lumberjack was busy today, despite still interestingly wet weather (although sunshine between lines of rainstorms is nice!)
He cut down the mostly dead tree, then trimmed the stump to stand on to cut a few dead or dying branches off another. It is more tidy out there now.

July 4, 2005
I'm hoping the "lean" on the big pretty tree is just something I haven't noticed previously because I hadn't sat at this window looking out there until recently. I'd always seen the tree from another angle and didn't notice the lean.

Of course it is 1AM, so the world is probably leaning a little bit.
11:04AM           Bill and Son have gone to pick up son's new gun. Then I think they're going to shoot it. I told them to be careful. They didn't invite me. Should I be sad? (shrug)
Nah. I think I'll go paint awhile.
13:21PM           I painted a wall in the Family Room (the rest of the one I started to see what the color would look like. Dad Bill says it looks pretty good. I can't decide whether to go Ocean Kiss all the way around behind the TV or Bagel, like I had planned. Oh well, no big deal. At least it gives my life meaning, eh?
How I Spent the 4th of July

Painting, of course!!! What else was I going to do?

Hey, it was either paint or sleep and I'm about all slept out. I did finish watching Gilmore Girls Season 2, so I can start Season 3 soon. Whenever. Whatever. It's fun, but not as MUCH fun when I have to watch them alone.

July 5, 2005
Today we painted a little bit more and we started laying the tiles we bought... let's see when... hm... well it was sometime in 2004. I'm tired of looking at the boxes of tile sitting around.

We got a roll of that patterned, transparent contact paper and covered the front entry window, for privacy.
Ginger isn't too sure, she says, "Marzipan, this smells funny. Where are we going to sneak our "accidents" now?"

Still a work in progress, and Bill is putting up new frame (which was in the garage since last summer) around the front door. We still have so many projects that we prepared for over a year ago but never started.
It is really nice to have Sgt. Bill around to motivate us! Now that we're started, the place is looking nicer every day. But OWWWww look at the clutter building up on those schranks!? Tsk. Tsk. Admittedly, some of it has to do with putting in the floor tiles and will be put away as soon as the task is completed.

July 6, 2005
2:07 AM --- yep that's in the middle of the night.
Sgt. Bill went out with his friend Rob, and we were sort of under the impression that he was coming home... but we didn't wait up for him, we just got carried away finishing up the entryway floor tile.

Placing the last entryway tile. This is taken without flash at 1:40 AM -- yep. That's daylight out thar folks. The sun has set but it's still twilighty all night. The paint is NOT that yellow!!! It's the light; it doesn't even really LOOK that yellow.
All done for the night. I think it would be a bit foolhardy to ask him to empty the dishwasher, don't you?

Pressing that last tile into place with a soft touch.
This tile looks really nice and Bill thinks it does look like stone. Fortunately it's not as COLD as stone. We made the decision to layer it over the existing floor for just a tiny bit more insulation. When we strike it rich (ha-ha) the plan is to rip out the downstairs floors and have in-floor heating with really NICE flooring (REAL stone, maybe!) We had friends in Germany with a floor like that and it was heavenly!
Later today (!) Bill will finish the door frame. I will take pictures of the window, etc. Maybe he will put in the new thermostat... we've had THAT a year, too!
This same tile will be in the kitchen, and we might get around to that today too, have to wait and see. I put some of the left over pieces of tile on that low windowsill that we scraped the paint off of... the dogs kept scratching there and it was in sad shape. I expect this to be more durable.
And look at this! The beautiful 12"x16" Dalhart Windberg print that Mom and Dad gave to us early in our marriage goes SO well with the color of the wall in the entryway! Hurrah.

"Obscurity"

If I were shopping for artwork TODAY, I would probably choose this because it goes so very well with our home. Now I am more than eager to decide where I want to put the beautiful prize-wining, handmade rug Aunt Ellen gave us for our wedding present. It is also going to be just gorgeous!

July 7, 2005
I'm feeling a little discouraged. The kitchen tiles are laid all except for inside the "pantry" (under the shelves) and it looks real nice... but things have gotten so cluttered up while I was working on the floors that now I feel like I'm starting all over on housecleaning. Add in that painting and floor work wreak havoc (or worse) on my back, knees and for some reason my hands... (must be the cutting and pressing) ... and my FEET. Sheesh why do my feet hurt? (SIGH) I'm tired of messes and clutter but most of all I am sure to heck tired of hurting.
I will try to keep this in perspective. I am fortunate. My family is the best family in the whole wide world. I have a roof overhead and I have food and water and really MORE than I will ever need. My discomforts are less than people with debilitating injury or illness are forced to deal with. So things are just fine; I should not be discouraged. In fact, when I take pictures of the work I have done and post them, I will feel that I have accomplished a job well done, and be happy, take some Motrin, and SMILE. End of chapter.

I feel better personally, since I took a nap. However, I am deeply stricken and angry when I heard about the violence in London. My heart mourns for everyone negatively affected by those attacks. Sad.

July 8, 2005
1:15 AM Yeah, yeah, I haven't gotten the hang of going to bed at a decent hour yet!!! I'll work on it later today. Yesterday, (July 7) I finished up the kitchen floor (except under the kitchen shelves) and Bill worked on the metal strips that go in-between rooms/different floors/carpet.

These are the kitchen curtains I made. The small print is coffee beans. The bottom border and tie-back are different coffee "expressions" written in "chalk" on navy blue. The top border is a bunch of different coffee mugs. They're not real ... uhm. Fancy. But they are what I wanted and I made them and I'm happy with 'em. After I wash the window I'll take a closer picture...
The floor really spruces up the area, because the old floor had been pieced in many places and had come unglued. There were a couple of gouges in it that had been there ever since we moved in, and it just wasn't "nice" anymore. This is much better. I hope to get a few little rugs to go in front of the sink, stove and fridge, but that will wait until a later date. Also need to finish painting the ceiling, which will brighten things up... and I'm THINKING about dark blue paint on the cabinets! Whoa!
Sgt. Bill and I caught up the laundry and as soon as I get the downstairs straightened back up again, I'm planning to tackle my own bedrooom. Imagine that! Well, we'll see how it goes. After all, later today is another day! (sort of!)
• • •

Here are a few closer views of the kitchen curtains. The lace was from one of the houses we lived in when we were in Germany. I still have all those old lace curtains and hope to use some of them throughout the house.

The girls gave me this clock for Christmas or my Birthday one year (sorry for forgetting which, girls) and it goes right in with the "coffee" theme.
The cups border along the top is just charming. I could almost wish the pot rack wasn't there, except that I love the pot rack. Besides, afterawhile who notices curtains? And remember, the wall isn't really THAT yellow!
          Now... the cabinets?
I had thought we'd paint them "Bagel" for awhile... I think the dark blue would be better now that the floor is in and reflects so much of the Bagel. We can cut out the center panels of the doors and put in the same plastic grid-panel that is in the light fixutre to look like glass. Uh. In my dreams. But still, it's an idea, isn't it? Just say yes. It isn't on the agenda for this year anyway.
Just Dreamin'!

I don't really imagine we'd do anything like the picture to the left, but it seems to me, since our budget is so tight I might enjoy the change for 5 years or so.
When I wrote to Annie, I said "It is potentially awesome" and when we were on the phone and she looked at the photo, she said "Whatever! It's sooo already awesome!” Or something along those lines. And she admits to squealing at least twice. This is a "go" project, as soon as I have the know-how and wherewithal.
...and a wherewith-who to help me do it. Annie, are you volunteering? (laughing)
Presently the shelves inside these cabinets are not adjustable and a couple of them are broken so they do not bear much weight. All of the upper shelves are out of my reach unless something is RIGHT at the front. Budgeting for a "true" kitchen renovation isn't a serious consideration before 2010 anyway, as much as I would love to re-do the countertops. Bill says it isn't possible to re-laminate counter tops or I would look into that. Come to think of it... I'll look into it anyway.

July 9, 2005
This morning I tried the blue cabinets view in a variety of other colors. None was even worth saving. So, my choice is either leave the cabinets their original color or go for the blue. Bill is "thinking" about it. I suggested that after the entire house is done, then we will revisit the kitchen. So let's see... 2010? (laughing)
Today's project is to get the house all tidy again, at least up to the point it was tidy before all this "renovation" took place. Then I'll tackle the pile of (cough) STUFF in the Den/Office and it'll be done.
Once all that is done, it's onward to my bedroom. So... 2009? (laughing) Yeah, probably.
It's strange to think of all the things I would like to see improved around the house. Specifically in the kitchen and den, I would like those windows with the blinds inside of them. We saw the ODL, Inc. of Zeeland, MI and think they are really nifty. It would be good for keeping the cold weather out too.
Another product they (ODL, Inc.) offer are tubular skylights. I think these would be a good idea in our bathrooms which have no windows. If the power goes out, it's pitch black in there. There is also an optional electric light kit, which would be good at night in the winter here, I imagine! They also make retractable screens. And somewhere there is bound to be a winter-weather-worthy doggie door. Another something to dream about; that's one thing I'm never at a loss for!
Know what else I'd love to have eventually? A paved driveway.
Not to mention the road in front of the house. (sigh) Hey, c'mon... we're making the house payment and THAT is an accomplishment. Paving the way in just has to wait a decade or three...

More Dreamin'?
Then of course, there's always the dream deck with a hot tub. (laughing) You know, a second tier built up high enough to "sink" the hot-tub and leave enough "maintenance space" below it. While we're at it, we'll just wrap that deck around the side of the house... and put in a sauna
Why "just" dream when I can dream really BIG?
This picture comes nowhere near the dream, but the general idea is the original deck (step out the backdoor height) would be rebuilt and then another deck, a step (or two) higher would extend along to the north-west corner of the house, and the 8 person hot-tub would be there... And naturally the fence would be nice and attractive (and private...) ZzZzZzZzZzZzzzzzzz. I'm dreaming. for sure.

Today the Alaska Dourtes (those present and accounted for) were actually able to sit down to a meal together! We had Chicken Alfredo, rice, green beans and salad with iced tea.
The wind has been very strong and gusty today (up to 50 mph) and has blown in a lot of smoke reducing visiblity to 2.5 miles. Smoke is forecast for tomorrow as well... (cough) Remember my threat to leave if we had smoke this summer? If only I could -- but I won't. We have to save up so maybe we can see the family for Christmas. It'll be worth it. (cough) For sure.
          Here is an interesting link:
National Weather Service, Alaska Region Headquarters
Middle Tanana Valley
That's an official enough weather site for me, I reckon!
The power has gone out 3 times with these winds and I have decided my next "I want it" is a UPS - Uninterrupable Power Supply. Fortunately I am in the habit of saving stuff about every 15 seconds (exaggeration... but only a slight one) but it is still irritating to lose power without shutting down properly.
While the power was out, Bill and I put in the new thermostat. We don't know if it works or not yet, because it is far too warm to turn the heat on, but next cold snap (if it gets colder than 65F in the house) we'll test it. As before we replaced the thermostat, all we have is heat... no option to just run the fan on its own, even in the summertime. Maybe we will be able to do that someday. In the meantime as long as the heat works in the winter, I am NOT gonna complain!
Then Now
I have moved the Windberg to another wall since this thermostat is larger than the old one. Besides the print looks much better on its own. However, it is now in the place I was considering for the rug from Ellen... Back to the drawing board on that one.
Good news: the smoke isn't as bad as it was earlier. Not as good: I didn't take any pictures. Whatever, we've seen smoke before... (cough). Right.

July 11, 2005
My Son is 24 years old! Happy Birthday, Bill! I am so proud of you! I remember holding you in my arms 24 years ago and thinking, "This boy can be anything!" and you have grown up to be a wonderful young man. I am BEYOND proud of you!
We had a good time out and about today. I got him some CDs (Masters) and we went to Cold Stone Creamery, where they sang him a birthday tune.

"I don't know but I've been told
some one here is getting old!

Then in the evening he went over to Jeremiah's to play X-box, etc. (Jeremiah's birthday is tomorrow.)
It is still breezy but the smoke has cleared and it's a really nice 75F that feels like 74F, as opposed to a 82F that feels like 92F (in Florida) or even 104 that feels like I don't even wanna GUESS what (in Texas.) I like Alaska!
Dad-Bill is flying for the diocese today so told Son-Bill "Happy Birthday" this morning before he left. We don't know what time he'll be home tonight.
Emily is home from camp today, she is sick with a sore throat/cold. Hopefully, she'll go back tomorrow after a good night's rest.

This is a neat link: Wunderground Satellite Map (Alaska).

I like watching the weather move across the state. When the realization of how big Alaska is takes hold, so does the understanding of how big the weather systems are.
I'm glad this is GOOD weather and not bad storms or anything. It'll be interesting to watch in the winter, now that I have found these links to check out!
The US and Alaska comparison maps are from a really cool website called: Alaska: A Bird's Eye View. It is geared for school age but is a good visual reference for everybody! The maps are in chapter 2.

Okay, so today's brilliant plan totally fell apart. My hope was that the guys would get the sofa moved off the back deck. (They did! Yay!) Then we'd take down the orange plastic fence and prepare to put up an inexpensive wire mesh fence to do until the day the ship comes in with all the dream-stuff. (That got done, too.) Good so far!
Now the sofa is in the FRONT yard, in the driveway, covered witha blue tarp, next to the old studded snow tires; a display just like any respectable Alaskan home should have!
Well, then Bill was taking a bag of trash through the house to the garage and ... uh. There was a casualty. It wasn't his fault!
The bag of stuff was just too bulky, and the plant was in the way. Since the doggie door is in there it didn't leave him ANY room to maneuver, even if he could have seen it. (You know how it is coming from the bright outside light into the dark inside.) Well, nobody was hurt, and that is the most important thing!
"And I didn't do it, either," says Ginger. "I'll be glad to vouch for Marzipan as well, if a treat is forthcoming."
So, cleaning up after the casualty was a considerable chore and I'm not a bit sure how eager I am to get back out in the yard.
Click for the full view.
While we were out there mosquitoes ate the entire back of my knees off. Okay, I'm exaggerating, but whoa, it itches!
Now we have a clear view of just how dismal the deck situation is. It's a little more serious than nailing in a few new boards.

Replacement is going to have to be held off until next spring at the earliest, because the supports underneath also need to be replaced.

Ideally, I guess we'd be able to replace the patio door (with something more energy efficient) when we get the patio materials, but we'll have to see what disasters befall this winter... maybe there won't be any?
We'll clear out a niche here (below) to be a potty area for the dogs.
My mission for this evening is to get out there and mow as close into the brambles as possible. Bill (Dad) has an Aero Club safety meeting to attend and (Son) Bill is having dinner at Jeremiah's house. So I can just mow, sew and woe to my heart's content, hm? (laughing)
Whew! I got most of the yard mowed... it started pouring rain though so I didn't get the back corners as neatly as I prefer to. Like it matters? We have no grass, it's ALL dandelions! (lol) I was pretty much soaked by the time I got the mower in the garage, so took a nice hot shower. Now Mother nature and I are both sparkly clean. Next agenda item: Take Emily her supper, her cell phone (she left it here) and her box that arrived today from Annie!... once Bill gets home with the car, that is.
Then I think I'll lay out the posts as well as I can to prepare for putting up our "trashy" fence. Bill hasn't said anything but I know what he thinks about this. I'd much rather have a state of the art gorgeous, landscaped yard kind of fence, too -- but that's not realistic.
These clips will secure the wire mesh to the poles. We already have the poles so this is minimal expense.
The goal is to contain the dogs and wire is going to look LOTS less trashy than the orange plastic did! Plus the dogs won't be able to squirm under this wire since it is not flexible like the plastic. This is temporary... 5 years or less. It's all about accomplishing the set goals, which can't be accomplished unless you set the goals! Right? Of course, right!
• • •
Missions accomplished, Emily got her supper and some gas in her car and I laid out the fence plans. Bill may wish to be a little more precise, but the basic perimeter goes 20 feet north from the house, 50 feet west, approximately 35 feet south, back east (to the west edge of the driveway) then angled back to the corner of the house. It's approximate because I was being eaten alive and didn't have any place to anchor the tape measure. (It's only a 30ft tape measure.)
A few dozen mosquito bites later, I'm relaxing with a pizza in the oven and plan to read some more of the "Wheel of Time" series by Robert Jordan. I finished the prequel Sgt. Bill got for me so I'm starting over with #1. The 11th book is due out October 11th. See all the Wheel of Time books in my Literary Craft Collection (in other words, Library!) I have read all the titles in my library, provided the books have been released. If they haven't been released, I intend to read them as soon as I get them!
There, now, wasn't that fun? Now ... I'm off to pizza and reading.
Ta ta!

July 13, 2005
That was great; a relaxing evening of reading and a good night's sleep. (smothering a yawn)
Now, about this back yard fence. I think we need about six or eight more posts.
Here is a picture of the back of the house:
The path the dogs took all winter long is painfully evident. They didn't deviate from it much at all. Hopefully they'll have a shorter path this winter, out into the "bushes" behind the house. I want to start training them to that area ASAP. I suppose it's a fact of life that if I am going to have dogs, and they're using the yard, there is going to be a place they have to use.
As much as I'd like it to be elsewhere, the back yard is where the dogs must "go" for the time being.
This is the line the fence will take along the north side of the yard, facing west. This is the longest part of the fence, about 50 feet. I am standing at the north-east corner of the planned fenced area, 20 feet from the house.
If I keep this line an even 20 feet from the house it goes into the bushes, so those will be trimmed back. The roses will probably twine themselves into the fence eventually and as long as we keep them tidy, I don't mind that too much.
This is the line the fence will take along the north side of the yard, facing east. I am standing at the north-west corner of the planned fenced area, 20 feet from the house.
There seems to be sort of a little alcove here beneath the cottonwood tree. Maybe it is because the moose chew on the tree branches or maybe because the wild roses don't grow down this far. At any rate, the moose will still be able to access their munchies since the fence leaves room for them. If we have to move the fence more, we will do that! (Imagine a moose leaning on such a little fence... no contest!)
Looking south from the north-west corner of the fence line, I pretty much line up with the satellite antenna. We don't even HAVE satellite, and this junky thing is going to blow down one of these days. I'd like a lighted flag pole there, m'self, but for now the thing stays where it is.
Above, view the line from the south west corner facing the north west corner of the fence.
This is the second longest section of the fence, approximately 35ft. If we have as much snow as we had last winter, there may be times the fence is difficult to see. I think putting reflectors atop the posts will be a good idea.

This is the south line of the fence. Another great idea will be to move the Van across the front yard, and park it over behind the cabin/shed. It hasn't moved in ages, but if we can get it started maybe we can move it over there. I'd like to get it fixed someday. Priorities dictate paying bills first though, so it has to wait.
There will be a gate in this portion of the fence, next to the driveway, for the mower to enter/exit.
The final length of fence will angle along the corner of the driveway to the house. Bill will probably weed-whack back there sometime next week.
I am also relying on him to build two gates -- one for the south side and one for the east side, next to the deck. I know he's really looking forward to that! (chuckle)
Sometimes it's handy to have a man around, you know?
• • •
Annie asked how I make iced tea. Here is how I make iced tea.
I make hot tea in a 10 cup Mr. Coffee maker. I use 1 Family Size Lipton Tea Bag (or 3 regular size tea bags) to the 10 (Mr. Coffee) cups of water. This is about 8 measuring cups (8 oz. ea.) of water, or 2 quarts.
While the tea is brewing, I put 3/4 cup of sugar in a 2 1/4 quart pitcher. This tupperware scoop (not to scale) holds just about 3/4 of a cup. Depending on how sweet I feel at the time I might put a little more or a little less, but we all know ... I'm always sweet! (snicker)
Or you can just bring 8 cups of water to a boil and drop in the tea bag. Steep it for about 15 minutes or so, remove the teabag, squeezing out excess water/tea.
Then I pour the hot tea into the pitcher and stir until the sugar is dissolved. After the sugar is dissolved, sometimes I put ice in the pitcher if I want to serve the tea immediately. Otherwise I just pour it over ice in glasses once it is cooled.
Use caution pouring hot tea into cold glass containers, the sudden change in temperature may cause the glass to break!

It's a gorgeous, wonderful, sunny, beautiful morning.
And 6AM is way too early to be up!!! But it is necessary and important and worth the effort because today Bill takes his driving test. In just about an hour! And then we'll go visit Cyndee at United Academics! A great day all around!
Still a gorgeous day. Of COURSE Bill did just fine on his driving test, 0 points (points are bad.) And the gentleman at the office we went to was so nice and professional it wasn't all scary like at the DMV. At least I didn't think so.
It was wonderful to get to visit with Cyndee, even though she was busy and working her tail end off! Then Bill and I went to breakfast at the Diner restaurant in Fairbanks. It is a nice little cafe kind of place.
Now I am attempting to convice Bill that we need to pound in the rest of the fence stakes and get going with the fence before the dogs drive me insane.
Ta, ta for ta-day!
