October 1, 2004
What a GREAT day -- Bill IV was promoted to Sergeant in the Marine Corps and enlisted for four more years of loyal patriotic duty and service. I am a proud Mama. He says he will probably be in Japan for awhile longer and will continue to shoot in competition if possible.
What a busy day! work was slow, but after has flown by. Part of that was because Bill needed to go get gas in the Diocese airplane (Piper Cherokee? something like that) and it took awhile. Then the darn thing wouldn't start, so he brought me home and went back to find some extension cords and plug it in to warm up the engine/oil, etc.
I figured that:
- He was POSSIBLY not going away for all day Saturday and Sunday
- He could paint the kitchen behind the fridge since he was going to be home, right?
Since he was going to do all this theoretical painting for me, I figured I would move the fridge and clean behind/under it. Keep in mind this fridge hasn't been moved since we moved in, and that was... uhh... 1997??? Yep. It was yuckky back there... but I swept and picked up stuff, and swept and picked up stuff til there was just the last layer of "grunge" left. How long do you think all that sweeping and picking took? 5 minutes.
Then I sprayed it with "Swiffer" stuff and let it sit. How long? 5 minutes. (There's a pattern here, hm?) I picked up most of the layer of grunge with a few papertowels. Next, I Swiffered it after that with the pad and moved the fridge back into place. How long did the WHOLE JOB take? 15 minutes!!!! A job I'd dreaded for YEARS, took 15 minutes!!!!
Was I surprised? You BET I was! All I could think was, "I bet the FLYlady knew this all the whole t/ime, and she would be laughing right now!"
I started FLYing 10 days ago, and it has made a huge difference in my outlook on life. That, plus my new haircut (from August) and I am ready to GO GET 'EM!!!
Tomorrow (October 2nd) I have an appointment for a trim... something else that was a FLYlady reminder which I would have overlooked or put off until I was miserable with my hair again. It feels SO good to be getting life back in order again.

Ahhhh, the trim feels GRRRRRREAT! I really enjoy going to see Dawn at Teamcutters in Fairbanks. I also had my eyebrows shaped, so I've got a bright-eyes and wooly-tailed outlook on life. (whatever that means!) If I ever get rich, I'm going for the whole kit-and-kaboodle, massage, facial... the whole nine-yards!
I had a LOT of fun chatting with Annie online and on the phone today and looking at some of her newest pictures of William. I miss her a lot, but it sounds like she is enjoying herself in Texas and loves William, Katie and family to bits.
Today's accomplishments include painting a swatch of the kitchen ceiling, which is a bit of a mess... popcorn ceilings are evil.
Then I checked for today's mission at http://www.flylady.net and got my direction for the day -- I swept the front porch, (brrrrrrrrrrrrr!) shook out the mats and stacked empty flower pots, then I swept and swiffered the front entry after clearing the clutter from the table there.
Tomorrow is Sunday. Bill is out of town (in the bush, for the Diocese) but I am going to sing with the choir at Mass, so that is something to look forward to. I'm a little uncomfortable, because I do not like choir robes at all... but oh well. There are worse things, hm? Until then... I'm a happy camper.
October 9, 2004
A swamping week, but a good one... I really enjoyed singing on Sunday... but... TOTALLY forgot that it was Thursday on Thursday, so missed Thursday night practice! (chagrined) And this Thursday, Annie comes home from Texas! So... hopefully they'll forgive me. I hope so. (crossing fingers!)
Still flapping along with http://www.flylady.net but when I miss a beat, I don't worry about it, just pick back up again and carry on. I feel sort of like an albatross trying to take off, but... in flight an albatross is very very graceful... I will get there!! Yes I will!!!
I have also signed up for the 10,000 steps Ididirod at Church -- I don't take anywhere NEAR 10,000 steps a day (that's 5 miles)... but will gradually build up to more than I take NOW, for sure... (average 2621) My first goal is no less than 2500 actual per day. This should help my blood pressure and maybe my weight, too. We'll see!
Today I started painting the downstairs bathroom. It used to be "Honeydew" which was a nice light spring green, but it didn't reflect light well at all -- sort of sickly in that little bitty space. I am painting it "Rhythmic Blue" but need one more quart to finish the job. The toilet is in very sad shape, it is running all the time unless we fiddle with it, and generally, er... ready for replacement. We will put in a new one, an inexpensive one, but it will be good practice because the other two toilets are in need of replacement too. This whole HOUSE could use a good dose of spiffing, but toilets are a necessity!!! (lol)

Where has this month GONE?
Bill and I got the new toilet in and the bathroom painted before Annie came home from Texas, where she "nannied" Will, her cousin (age 18 months+) while his new sister was joining the family. Annie is teaching me so much stuff... that she learned and did in Texas! My sister signed us up for "Saving Dinner" which has been loads of fun for us. It's really great, and it's introducing us to lots of things we'd never tried, and even more we never THOUGHT of trying before. No more major hassle making a shopping list or deciding what to cook! I LOVE it!
Bill is in Sitka again. He's been gone a week and will be home in a week so we're at the halfway point. I am going upstairs tonight and painting at least one wall in the laundry. Emily is spending the night with a friend. Well, first I will ask Annie if she thinks the smell will bother her too much... if it does, thenI will wait until tomorrow, but it will be after we've built her new computer before I get going on it.
I'm not quite sure what's happening to me, but I guess I like it. Things I never seemed to get motivated for are a lot more pleasant, like cooking dinner, cleaning, painting... it's kind of weird. Believe me, I'm NOT complaining! My back still hurts as much as ever, I still swat myself when I start "grumping" ... but over all ... I'm just doing better spirits-wise. Must be because I quit dying my hair, do you reckon? (laughing)
It really is weird, because I'd have thought I would get really depressed, since Bill seems to be gone 2 weeks out of the month to Sitka, works CONSTANTLY when he's here locally, and is gone a lot flying for the Diosese. He gets home on the 31st of October, and leaves the 6th of November for the bush. I guess it just makes family time all the more special when he is home, and we're more appreciative.
I won't even think about back-sliding. I think the best thing FLYlady has done for me is that I've learned "You're not behind! Jump in where we are!" And that I can start over anytime and every time I have to, nobody is going to think the worse of me for not being perfect. Go figure. :)
October 30, 2004
Does anybody know where October went? it thought it just started last week and tomorrow... it's a done deal!
I will admit, it has been an extremely busy month. We put in a new toilet, painted the downstairs bathroom and put in floor tiles, a fan timer and new light switch, a new light fixture in the den, started our FLYRoutines, Annie came home, and we started Saving Dinner, built Annie's computer, and Bill was gone for two weeks. He's home tomorrow (Halloween)... and we plan to go to a play and have a great home-cooked dinner. And we have SNOW! Guess that is all it takes to make time fly!
Now we're all set for November! See you there! |
