Making Tracks for Texas
My Annie girl left me in Alaska last year when she went to Texas to help her cousins Shannon and Chris with William and things when their new baby girl Katie was born. She enjoyed herself SO much she cried when it was time to leave!
I was so glad when she came home, I vowed she would not leave me again, and she won't! I am going to Texas with her on United Airlines! I will get to see William and Katie and their parents, PLUS meet their chihuahua-dawg, Sally!
Mom-Deb went to the United Airlines website and looked up the rules and guidelines for taking dogs like me in the cabin of the plane. That web page is at: http://www.united.com/page/article/0,6722,1048,00.html
The USDA says some airlines allow passengers to carry their pets in the cabin of a plane if the animals are capable of fitting under the passengersą seat. Two very important things about traveling with pets noted by United Airlines are:
Health documentation
Passengers are required to make sure all health and pet travel documents are current and compliant with local, state, federal and international entry requirements and regulations. The passenger will assume full responsibility for penalties assessed by agencies for non-compliance of pet health and entry requirements.
Carry-on
Fully weaned dogs or cats at least eight weeks old and domesticated household birds (canaries, finches, parakeets) can travel with you in the cabin if they are small enough to fit and stay comfortably in a kennel under the seat. Tropical birds such as parrots are not allowed.
Since I don't have feathers and I have been fully weaned for about 3 or 4 years I'll be fine! (I forget how old I am anymore, just like Mom-Deb does!)
Some airlines have very general guidelines for carry on pet carriers, like Delta: "Small pets are allowed in the cabin as carry-on in suitable hard or soft-sided kennels small enough to stow beneath the seat directly in front of you." Other airlines are more specific, like this one: "Pet carrier must be an approved pet type, hard or soft sided. It must fit under the seat in front of passenger - maximum dimensions are 10.5" x18 "x11". Weight of the pet + carrier cannot exceed 15 pounds." The problem is -- they don't specify WHO approves the carrier (for carry on dogs!) So Mom-Deb spent about 20 minutes on hold checking with the airline to make sure. They told her to go to Wal-Mart to buy an under the seat kennel. (raising my doggie eyebrows) O-kay!
After looking at what was available and checking the budget, Mom-Deb had to choose the inexpensive version similar to the Samsonite® Petite™ Pet Carrier. Both are made by Blitz USA, Inc. but the Wal-Mart version is vinyl instead of leather, and Made in China. It makes us sad that we couldn't get one made in the USA, but our budget is totally tightened.

My Annie-girl is very wise when making our travel plans!
- Annie scheduled a veterinarian visit and request a health certificate and vaccination records. I got my vaccinations updated because in Texas they require yearly rabies vaccinations, but in Alaska it's only every 3 years.
- Annie made sure my identification tags are up-to-date and my new rabies tag is on my little harness.
- Annie has put Shannon's address and/or phone number on my new travel tote.
- Annie carries bottled water and I drink it from a plastic cup.
- Annie has packed all my medications in the pocket of my tote, along with a little first aid kit.
- She will excercise me and play in the yard a few times during the day (we leave late at night) so I'll be tired out and ready to sleep.
- She will feed me a little bit about 6 pm (about 6 hours before we leave) and give me the medicine from the vet to make me sleepy when we are ready to leave.
- I am all clean (bathtime!) and my nails are nicly trimmed. I have some new stuff on me to kill fleas, because they have those in Texas.
- She will carry an extra little tote liner just in case I have an accident of some sort, and potty pads for me to go on at layovers during the trip.
- She will carry a print out of the travel rules and restrictions so we can show we know what we're doing! Isn't she smart?
