Sooner than expected, my early lessons are recalled!

Sit, Stay, Stop...
It has been an extremely busy winter for me with the Dourte Family! Besides getting to know each other and get used to a whole new house, my Annie-girl was a SENIOR this year at Ben Eielson Jr./Sr. High School. My Emily-girl was very active in choir and drama, so they were on the go almost all the time!

Now that we (Annie and me) have graduated from high school, we have more free time and have been able to get back into training me to have fun outdoors! Of course... springtime had a lot to do with that too-- I don't go out when it's really cold.
The first thing we did was sharpen up on the Wait command. I've gotten really good at this, although my family isn't too sure what I'd do with an audience or distractions. They are also a little nervous about letting me off my lead in the yard since they don't have a fence yet. I obey them, but they know I am full of mischief and don't know the big world yet, so they keep an eagle eye on me. (So an eagle won't fly off with me, right?)
The main thing my family has learned in my re-training phase is not to slack off during the off season. I will benefit from reminders and training sessions throughout the year, even if we can't go outdoors and jump hurdles or run through the weave poles. |
My basics must have a strong foundation for me to be able to enjoy running the agility course, because if I get distracted and wander off, we could all get a little frustrated. I'm a fun dog, and my training is fun so long as we are consistient and I can understand what my girls want me to do.
Emily and Deb attended the Tanana Valley Kennel Club ALL BREED DOG SHOW & OBEDIENCE TRIAL on May 27. They watched some of the events, and saw my breeder, Joelle there. She showed several of my relatives and had her picture taken with little Bailey, who is just adorable as ever! Deb and Emily held and petted Dusty and several of my other kin.
While they are not yet interested in entering me in any competitions, they want to learn what I'm capable of, what I might enjoy trying, and how to further train me to enjoy an active lifestyle. They hope to attend one or two other dog shows in Alaska this summer.
