What is a Pomapoo?
Good Question
A puppy, is a puppy, is a puppy... and while most are entirely loveable, indiscriminate puppy breeding is irresponsible. It's a personal choice whether you want to seek a pomapoo or adopt from the shelter. It's important that you carefully consider the opportunity to neuter or spay your pet. Please make a conscientious choice.
The "pomapoo" is not a recognized pure breed. It is a mix of poodle and pomeranian. A purposely bred "pomapoo" is a hybrid -- which is a carefully planned result of genetic breeding to achieve a new breed standard, to enchance the strength of the genetic pattern for the breed. Not-so-careful planning results in the "mixed-breed" commonly known as "mutt." The judgemental might condemn deliberate cross-breeding as careless or even cruel. The purist may insist that a cross breed of any kind is a mutt, even if it is purposeful. I have to wonder... since all dogs came from the same source, and all dogs go to heaven, does it really matter? Dogs are canine, cats are feline and people are primates. Big deal.
However, the pomapoo is a delightful result of two breeds I would never consider owning. Pomeranians are usually tiny, smart, bold and inquisitive. Poms have a long, full coat that looks like more trouble than it really is. I've always thought they were yippy and fussy and generally a pain in the patootie. Poodles are popular because they are smart, fun and loyal. They can be groomed in some interesting styles... from distinctive to (in my opinion) ridiculous. I've always thought their fur felt more or less like steel wool and they were mean. (shrug) When I was a little kid riding my bike a poodle ran out into the street and bit me, so I haven't been particularly fond of them.
It may seem like a pomapoo could combine some weird characteristics from each breed. Fortunately, it seems as if the best wins out in our little pomapoo. Marzipan's mother was a little black/silver poodle and her father was a pomeranian. Not all the puppies in the litter show the same characteristics... for instance Marzi's fur is more pom than poo, but her sister Cookie seems to be more poo than pom. Interesting, but not important to us, as we are not going to breed Marzipan. What is important to us is her health and happiness.
Marzipan is strong and sturdy. She has a friendly, bold personality and is extremely intelligent. We have never seen so much energy, aptitude, and potential in a dog! That she is cute is just icing on the cake! We don't really think of Marzi as a "Pomapoo" ... she is our dog. And we love her to bits!

When Marzipan was a puppy, her ears flopped over, and some sources say that is a bad sign. However, her hears are upright now, so if we'd been "judging" we could have missed out on a delightful little dog.
Her tail curls over her back, which is considered a good characteristic, but more importantly it wags joyfully when she greets us and plays with us. I think the bottom line comes down to why we want a dog. She is our friend. She's part of our family. | Next
