Chihuahua Chronicles
Whew!!! She's smart, and fearless!

StrongBad would be proud. This is one strong and fearless puppy. By the second day she was going up and down the stairs without a hitch (well, almost... sometimes she had to stop and rest) and she loves to socialize!

Not a bit shy! - It didn't take long for Marzipan to fit right in. Although she's technically Emily's dog, school keeps them apart for most of the day and need for sleep means Marzi goes to Mama-Deb at night. (We knew that would happen, but everybody's okay with it.)

Marzipan was totally fearless when she first met Smuckers and Ginger, but Smuckers wasn't quite sure. It didn't take as long to warm up to her as it took Smuckers to like Ginger, though. Both older dogs recognized very quickly that Marzi is a baby. By playing together, Marzi learns that hard nipping is not acceptable because they aren't going to put her in her crate like Mama-Deb does... they're going to nip right back!

Who's the Boss? - Smuckers so happy to play with Marzipan, and only occasionally has to remind her who the big dog here. Ginger has been the biggest grump, which confuses Marzi. Whenever Ginger decides to play, Marzi is undeniably perplexed, not knowing if it's a good thing or not. The big dog is understandably territorial about her rawhide chew chips and food dish, but Smuckers knows just how to put Marzi in her place.

She who sleeps with the most toys... - If toys are wealth, Marzipan is one rich pup. Her first toy was Booda. It's really a peachy colored terrycloth stuffed chipmunk made by "Booda" and we just call it Booda. Honestly, we have enough trouble remembering each other's names that it's a good thing we aren't naming all the dog toys.
Her favorite toys are a ball with a bell in it, and a little stuffed Lion-King thing. The ball was made for cats, and too much of it drives everybody in the house crazy (except Marzipan, of course!) It's already lost. (Looking innocent) The Lion-King toy wasn't made for dogs, so Mama-Deb checked it out very carefully and pulled on the ears and tail to make sure Marzi would have a hard time destroying it. So far, it has survived. She has a floppy green ball that she likes a lot too, which might just replace that bell-ball.
Marzipan also inherited a few of Smucker's old toys. She just won't play with toys very much anymore, she'd rather play with Marzipan or chew on a big rawhide chip. Marzi utilizes her collection very well though, because she is very easily distracted.

Doggie Diet Planning - Speaking of easily distracted, it's a wonder Marzipan is eating enough to grow at all. She goes to her bowl and gets one bit of kibble and takes it to her bed and eats it, then returns for another one. This is common behavior in Pomeranians, and she shows a LOT of traits like that.
Now that we have a puppy in the house, we have puppy food!!!
Wellness® Super5 Puppy Mix is VERY tasty. It is also very fattening to grown-up dogs like Smuckers and "senior" dogs like Ginger. We love that puppy food SO much though, we'll sneak and scheme almost any which way to get a few tidbits.
All three of us like Smucker's food, which is the Wellness® Dry Fish & Sweet Potato formula. It is fattening for Ginger, but not fattening enough for Marzipan. Ginger doesn't much like her Wellness® Senior Super5 Mix formula, but if Deb throws it into the trash can and then puts it back into her bowl, she'll eat it. (What a dumb dog.)

Sleeping arrangements - Sleeping arrangements and rules have taken some adjustment for little Marzi. Smuckers used to sleeping with her Annie-girl in her bed, but of course the puppy isn't ready for that yet. On nights when Marzi is a fuss-budget though, she must go into the travel-kennel to sleep with Booda. Sometimes Deb will put the kennel on her bed and very gently "rock" it, if Daddy-Bill is away. She makes a "Shhhhhhhh...." sound softly and Marzipan settles down to sleep for a few hours. Marzi isn't ALWAYS fussy. Mainly, Marzi sleeps in a cozy pink dog-bed in Mama-Deb's bedroom, which is in an exercise pen with her toys, waterbowl, chew and piddlepad.
