Quality Kibble Control Patrol

Why should I eat stuff you won't touch?

I visited a vet again and enjoyed going out for a ride. I went to see her because of my ongoing itchy, red skin problem, which we think was triggered by a food allergy or diet deficiency. She examined me carefully, listened patiently to my past treatment and reactions, and talked about getting some fur to grow on my tummy. It's as bare as a human baby's bottom!

For now I am still on the Prescription Diet® Canine z/d® ULTRA Allergen Free until my new food arrives. She gave me some special liquid, called Omegaderm-3™ with OptiZinc™.

The vet also recommended I check out a website,
www.njboxers.com/faqs.htm
and I did. it talked about the BARF Diet... BARF stands for "Biologically Appropriate Raw Food" or "Bones and Raw Food". It sounds interesting but the thought of eating a raw chicken wing just about freaks me out. It makes Deb cringe, too. She has concerns about the practicalities of feeding me raw food, but she is going to study it carefully. I bet I'd like it better than these brown pebbles I've been chomping on!

Other sites mentioned at the vet's office were:
http://www.onceuponadog.com
(this one cracked me up!)
and
http://www.naturaldog.com
(THIS was a neat site... I liked the massage information.)

In the course of our scouring the internet for the perfect food, we came across the name and number of a local supplier,
49ER FEED DIST.
PO BOX 57159
NORTH POLE, AK 99706
(907) 488-8340
He recommended Blackwood Feeds. Deb will ask our vet about that one, it's at the top of our list to try first, if it's ok with the vet.

As far as other food ideas, after researching a LOT, we were inclined to try the Flint River Ranch, from Joan Beverly (Distributor #9257) in particular, but the company doesn't ship to Alaska. It's way expensive to ship up here. Sometimes it feels like another country instead of part of the United States.

Deb has Innova, Canidae, and Eagle Pack (contains corn) on her "ask about" list. We're looking forward to switching over. Right now Ginger tries to steal my food and she probably doesn't need this kind. (Deb says Ginger would try to steal my food even if it was plastic pretend food, just because I have it and she doesn't!)

Pet Food Direct carries Canidae and Eagle Pack dog foods as well as many other brands.

What we are looking for in my food is "Natural" things dogs were born to eat. Meat is at the top of the list. My digestion was made to digest good protein and essential amino acids from meat, which are important for health and energy. I need calcium and other elements for strong bones and teeth, good eyesight, hearing, and healthy blood. And plenty of healthy calories for energy!

I'm about as interested in eating chicken feathers, heads and feet as Deb is (which is not at all!) Would YOU want to eat something full of "by products"? Farmers probably don't worry much about dogs or foxes raiding a grain silo, especially soy, or corn... I'd rather raid a hen house and go for the eggs. I'm not a bit interested in peanut hulls, chaff or other stuff swept off the millers or butchers floor -- And I'm already sweet enough without any added sugars!

I surely don't need BHT, BHA, or Ethoxyquin to preserve the food for my little body, either. Ethoxyquin has been called "the ultimate carcinogen" and is not approved for human use. There is a little bit of it used to preserve the color of paprika and ground chili pepper. For humans, the maximum allowable residue in eggs, meat, poultry, apples, pears, poultry fat and livers for is 0.5 parts per million. Why would Deb feed me pet food which might contain the maximum allowable concentration of 150 ppm? She doesn't want to, but the food I have now has BHA and Ethoxyquin!

Deb left a message for her friends in the CompuServe Dogs Forum and several members were very supportive of natural dog nutrition.

In the meantime, Deb found these resources on the internet to relieve itchy dogs:
Itchy Dog (www.dogbreedinfo.com)

Itch Control (www.vetinfo.com)

ATOPIC DERMATITIS IN THE DOG
by Stephen Shaw, BVetMed, CertSAD, MRCVS (Newmarket, Suffolk, England)

Please pass the chicken wings? Maybe not quite yet, but we are certainly starting to look for the best available alternative!
